Democrats are asking that all legislation be read in full, something not typically done. They're hoping to get Republicans to give in and grant a hearing.
One person even said that it took more than three hours to read one bill. Democratic Rep. Brian Cronin said that they want to stall the legislature. All they want to do is simply have the discussion about a possible increased tobacco tax, and they see no reason Republicans won't grant their wish.
"Frankly it's not very good for making public policy when certain ideas are shut down before they even get started," said Cronin.
The tax increase is projected to provide around $50 million in revenue for the state. That's an amount expected to relieve some of the $300 million state taxpayers spend every year for medical expenses for tobacco related illnesses.
"Yes, many people will stop smoking, and that's another great reason why we should be looking at this legislation," said Cronin.
Some residents in Idaho Falls seemed to agree Wednesday.
"They need to raise taxes for cigarettes and tobacco as much as they can. Drugs, alcohol, tobacco, all that stuff. All the bad things," said Katie Demongey.
"Certain taxes should be done on certain products that are being bought in mass quantities," said Taylor Farris.
However Jeff Thompson, R-Bonneville County, said there are many reason to not support the tax increase.
"Many of the emails we have received from our constituents ask us not to raise taxes," said Thompson.
It's anyone's guess if the GOP will give in, however they seem very firm on not raising taxes for anyone.
Idaho Democrats said on Wednesday that a recent pole shows 70 percent of Idahoans are in favor of the proposed $1.25 increased tobacco tax.
